How This All Began

A few years ago, my son Eric was heading off to College. I thought he was ready.

Eric had gone to summer camps every year, and those summers he lived in dorms at Universities in different parts of the county. One year he even spent the summer at Oxford in England. it’s not like he’d never been away from home before.

I went through the packing list and made sure he had everything, we talked about money and budgeting, gas, car care, etc.

I thought he was ready.

Then, one day, before he left, I asked him to replace the shower curtain in his bathroom. I left him the new curtain and hooks, thinking this was an easy task. However, then I came home to this:

He couldn’t figure out how to hang up the shower curtain. He had it upside down and didn’t see the holes. So he thought he’d engineer a solution and use pants hangers. It works, but not really. Really, just no.

Fast Forward….

Eric has done amazing things since the shower curtain day, but he also continues to learn. He learned how to flip his first condo while school was closed for Covid.

Now, Eric’s starting his third year at the University. He’s doing well but didn’t want to have roommates. So he had to figure out a way to earn money in his house without having roommates there all year. He did figure out a solution! He’s Airbnb-ing the property on game day weekends and making great money.

But, having him as a homeowner has now shown me that there are more things that he really should know. And I want to be the one to teach him, and I’d like to teach others these things too. I’ve picked up some tips and tricks over my many years and hope you enjoy me sharing them with him (and with you).
